Every few years, the city of Cleveland opens up the streetcar level of the Detroit-Super Bridge (also commonly known as the Veterans Memorial Bridge) to pedestrians, allowing residents to get a glimpse into the past, when Cleveland was one of the largest and most important cities in the country.
These days, the streetcar level is not much but a bunch of old tunnels, the old streetcar line, and a suspended deck level that offers some unique views of the downtown skyline. Still, it’s great to experience this interesting little bit of Cleveland history, though this time, the city would like us all to think about this bridge’s future.
The city is considering a bunch of different options for the streetcar level, potentially reimagining it as a public park, a bike path, or perhaps even – partly, at least – an event venue anyone can rent.
Given the size and scope of the streetcar line, there’s room to accommodate just about every idea, and the ultimate plan will likely be an amalgamation of different proposals. Whatever it ends up being, though, it should end up being another crown jewel in Northeast Ohio’s public park portfolio.
